Stepping foot on the scales can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To some it's just a number - a representative piece of data that tells them how their holiday went. To others it's anxiety inducing, shame, fear and above all dread.
Looking at them in a completely objective manner, they give you data. Now it's what that data represents in terms of actions that most people fall foul. That number (which can fluctuate heavily depending on the time of the month, water intake, levels of poo in you) is a data point for you to act or accept. If you choose to act upon that data then being mindful of what you consume both diet and information plays a huge role in your success. Exercise plays a supporting role, vitally important for health, but marginal in terms of "calories burned".
The scales are to be used as a tool - nothing more and nothing less. Use the tool to build a healthier you, never let the tool dictate, only allow it to serve it's purpose.
All of this is easier written than done, but bare this in mind, if the tool starts to dictate your feelings then ditch it. Concentrate on pictures and measurements only - if you're comfortable with it as a data point, then add it in alongside the other two.
